The 5G revolution

Revolutionizing experiences in all sectors

19 Dec 2017

When we talk about the arrival of 5G technology, the first thing we probably think about is its advantages and disadvantages. The reality is that we already operate today with mobiles that incorporate the 4G network, which works excellently on most mobile devices and suggests the need for something more. So why 5G technology?

The world of enterprise mobile applications is advancing at great speed, making it necessary to have networks that support this evolution and that are capable of keeping pace with the technological development we are experiencing. 5G technology responds to this, becoming the new technological explosion that joins IoT, Big Data and many other technologies, making it possible.

It is a leap to an even more connected world, where surfing at very high speeds and with low latency means no longer talking about autonomous driving, remote medicine or smart cities, but making it a reality. Therefore, we are not only talking about mobile applications or hardware manufacturers as the main affected parties, but also about homes, offices, industry, logistics, medicine… We are talking about a totally connected and intelligent world, which we will reach in the coming years, thanks to the technological advances and networks that will make this explosion possible.

Are we ready for the new revolution?

5G technology: revolutionizing experiences in all sectors

This type of network promises nothing less than 5,000 megabytes per second. An experience that takes browsing, downloading and data transfer to a level we have never seen before, as it involves using mobile devices 20 times faster than with 4G networks.

Such a leap is a dramatic advance, as it means that business mobiles will work much, much better. No more long waiting times when sending or receiving files, negative download experiences or slow web browsing. High-speed networks are a major improvement for mobile devices, which will translate into improved user experiences.

Another important advantage is that this new type of network means much more stable connections. If you are one of those who work every day with the Internet, you will not have to worry about temporary crashes, speed reductions or connectivity problems. Thanks to these networks, everything will run smoothly and efficiently, ensuring unprecedented stability.

Although 3G, H+ and 4G networks were a step forward in the connection speed of most mobile devices, the next leap is extraordinary. These configurations, while suitable for enterprise mobile applications, are less reliable when there is a problem with the connection. With the new network model, we will have a signal that will be very difficult to interrupt, which guarantees that we will be able to work with more peace of mind.

Therefore, we highlight, in particular, the following advantages:

  • Increased performance: the high speed at which it will be possible to operate will favor the development of Artificial Intelligence as well as autonomous learning and process automation.
  • Improved latency and priority to safety-critical devices. Especially important in the case of self-driving cars, for example.
  • Connectivity, intelligence and IoT. Smoother connections will enable superior linking between our devices, which means improved response speed, bringing connectivity between devices to a new level.

Thanks to the change, the channel architecture between devices will be improved. It is important to consider this, since 4G networks did not always allow us to achieve the desired results, when generating an interaction between two mobile devices. The impact this technology will have will be seen little by little, as new permanently networked technologies reach the market. It is not only about better connections between our devices, but also about the possibility of increasing the number of connections we achieve simultaneously.

5G networks also have a slight disadvantage

Although most aspects are positive, the new networks also have a drawback, which does not directly affect the user, but could affect those of us looking for business mobiles with this technology.

The high cost of infrastructure not only applies to service providers, but also extends to consumers. Mobile devices will need to adapt to the tide and therefore will not always be able to benefit from so much bandwidth. This means that, in practice, we will be forced to purchase new terminals to take advantage of all the speed offered by the arrival of this revolutionary technology.

Will the cell phones we have today be able to use it? Depends. In some cases it is possible, since the higher-end terminals already integrate the necessary hardware for the new technology. However, in the mid and low ranges, they are unlikely to be able to connect to them. Thus, only a portion of the devices will benefit from the change, at least in the short term.

5G: Breakneck speed in a connected world

However, 5G technology needs to be thoroughly tested and refined before it becomes the definitive standard. Over the next two years we will see how it is implemented little by little, completely revolutionizing the world of technology, but in a very positive way.

Proof of the importance of 5G networks is that by 2020 there are expected to be 10 billion mobile terminals and 100 billion global wireless connections. It is possible to mark the beginning of 5G technology, but also its scope?

Once again, we have to open our minds and think that everything is possible: did we think it was possible to talk to a robot, receive parcels via drone or autonomous driving?
